Clean, Cleanse, Contribute.
Let's revive a Sunnah.

The Miswak Initiative
As part of MTFA's 120th Anniversary celebration of community support, we are giving away 12,000 Miswak at selected mosques.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regularly used the miswak before many ibadahs he performed, particularly prayers, reading the Quran, and entering a majlis.
Support us as we revive a forgotten Sunnah. Let's clean, cleanse, and contribute, together.
A forgotten Sunnnah
Why the Miswak?
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet SAW said:
"If I had not found it hard for my followers, I would have ordered them to use the siwak before every prayer." (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim)
Miswak (also known as siwak or sewak) is a natural toothbrush made from the roots, twigs, or stems of the Salvadora persica tree, commonly known as the arak tree or the toothbrush tree. This natural dental tool has been used for over 7,000 years, making it one of the world's oldest oral hygiene instruments.
The use of siwak holds special significance in Islamic tradition, where it is considered a Sunnah (practice) of Prophet Muhammad SAW.
These include:
1. While making wudhu
2. Before prayers
3. Upon entering one's house
4. Before reciting the Quran
5. Upon waking up
6. And many others
Preparing the Miswak
How to Use the Miswak
-
Prepare the Stick: Cut about 1 cm off the end of a fresh miswak stick
-
Chew the Cut End: Gently chew until the fibers separate and form a brush-like tip
-
Brush Your Teeth: Use the fibrous end to brush your teeth with gentle strokes in figure of 8
-
Rinse: Clean the miswak with water after use
-
Store Properly: Keep in a clean, ventilated container to maintain freshness
-
Replace the Brush Head: Cut off the used bristles every few days and create a fresh brush end
Health Benefits of Miswak
1. Natural Antibacterial Properties
Miswak contains natural compounds with proven antimicrobial effects:
-
Tannic acid
-
Salvadorine
-
Trimethylamine
-
Silica
-
Resin
-
Vitamin C
These natural compounds help fight bacteria that cause plaque, gingivitis, and bad breath.
2. Effective Plaque Removal
Studies have shown that miswak is as effective—and sometimes more effective—than conventional toothbrushes at removing dental plaque. Its natural fibers act as both bristles and floss, reaching areas that regular toothbrushes might miss.
3. Fresh Breath Naturally
Miswak contains natural essential oils and resins that freshen breath without the artificial flavors found in commercial toothpastes. Many users report longer-lasting fresh breath compared to conventional brushing.
4. Strengthens Teeth and Gums
The natural compounds in miswak help strengthen gum tissue and remineralize tooth enamel. Regular use can lead to healthier gums and fewer dental problems.
5. Environmentally Friendly
Unlike plastic toothbrushes that contribute to landfill waste, miswak is 100% biodegradable and sustainable. One miswak stick can last several weeks with proper care, making it an eco-conscious choice for oral hygiene.
6. Economical and Accessible
Miswak is generally less expensive than continuously purchasing toothbrushes and toothpaste, offering an affordable oral care solution.
